Application Note
Battery Life Clocks for PACSystems CPUs
A set of user-defined function blocks have been developed to provide a means for estimating and scheduling CPU battery replacement in PACSystems projects. This memo describes what these blocks do, how to install them with Proficy Machine Edition (ME), and how to use the blocks in the application logic.
Each block acts as an alarm clock to indicate when the CPU battery should be replaced. The block must be reset when a new battery is installed. The block computes an expected lifetime for the battery, based on the CPU type, the battery type, and the estimated hours that the CPU is off per week. The computation assumes the battery is fully charged. The block adds the expected lifetime to the current PLC time, to determine an end-of-life time for the battery. When that end-of-life time is reached, the block sets an output and places an application message into the controller fault table.
